Airport Map on MFD

Posted on April 6, 2012 03:28 by pllewer

Hi

Could you guys add Airport Map on MFD/ND or a separated display just like A380's or B787's?
Here are few photos from Airliners about this feature

Just like FSKEPPER or FSNavigation, it shows the aircraft position and display the airport(such as taxiway, runway, parkingbay, number of parkingbay/taxiway/runway) on MFD or ND, that feature will be very useful and amazing.

Hi,

This would definitely be a cool feature to have!

The only problem I see is getting a concise database of airport taxiways and ramps to base the drawings on. Retrieving it from the simulator would probably not be an easy task as getting into the depths of FS9 or FSX is generally quite difficult. It would also only make it work with one simulator and not another or the GPS.

We could use the X-Plane's airport database which is public and could be packed in the app, the problem here is that the database itself is relatively incomplete for many airports which just appear as a runway with a taxiway parallel to it, and when a third party airport is installed, its data would not be present in AirTrack.

So, the idea is good, the question is, where to get a reliable and up-to-date airport database that could be used and packed with AirTrack. Any ideas on this are welcome :)

Hello,

Thank you for your reply!

I'm an FS9 user and I didn't use XP, maybe you can use the base BGL file of the airport(created by AFX/AFCAD/ADE) in MSFS, so when someone install a new airport, the App will shows the new airport depends on the base BGL file of this airport.

Hi,

this would be really great. Using the BGL files is probably really the best way ("FS FlightSim Commander" does this for example) and it ensures that the data used is consistent. I guess we would need a program that extracts this data from the local FS installation and saves it to a (several) file(s) which we can then upload to the cloud (size is about 50 MB in case of FlighSim Commander and FS9).

Best wishes, Alexander

Hi.

I would personally love this feature as well, so I'm voicing another vote for it.

By the way, the open source project XHSI does a reasonable rendering of the airport map from the navigation data that you have in your x-plane folder. I don't have the programming skills to do so, but maybe it's worth a look to see how they do it.
