some feedback and suggestions

Posted on April 20, 2012 16:36 by thetechnobear

Ive been using this app with XP 10, and have to say its brilliant, very simple to use, and makes so many things so much easier to use.
(particular FMS, and COMMS stuff), im using on both ipad and iphone :)

a few suggestions, perhaps i might be missing some of these.
- B/C mode for runways with only one ILS

- Local map mode,
basically a static map to help plan routes... this could be full screen, and scrollable (bit like the map within xplane), if you want could even include a toggle to centre around plane (hmm, suppose that is a kind of moving map) - this is not much different to your current map modes, but just allows full screen usage, and to pan around (ipad only?!)

- PDF reader and/or webkit window... to allow us to view external references whilst flying, where we dont have charts
(might need multiple windows, e.g. so i can have approach plate, and airport diagram open)

(btw, can i get charts for europe to be loaded?

anyway, as i said first, this is a fantastic app, thanks for the effort so far its really improving my xplane experience

Hi,

Thanks for the suggestions, added to the wish list.

About local map or moving map mode, there has been already some work on something like this so it will definitely come in the future at some point, although at the moment I don't know when or how it will be.

About the PDF reader, the current way of doing it is by using the charts centre; you upload the PDF to the web site and it appears (you can download) to AirTrack. Although it is meant for charts, there is nothing stopping you from uploading any other PDFs you want, say one with a plane's checklist or a cookery recipe for example :)

About charts for europe, we don't have them to distribute as we're not a charts provider so that is why you don't see them. We process and distribute the FAA charts but this is as far as it goes. They are generally distribuited by the different AIPs, and it is difficult to keep them all up-to-date.

So what we provide is the possibility of uploading your own charts so you can upload the PDFs with the airports you fly to and they will appear on your device.

In the future we will see ... perhaps we can create some kind of public domain or flight sim charts centre like VATSIM or IVAO charts which are then available to everyone. The only trouble here is to have someone with dedication to do this and keep maintaining it, or perhaps by dividing in delegations of authority.

If anyone is interested in the job let me know and I'll provide the technical means to do it.

happy flights,

thanks for the reply

did you understand the BC mode request?

local map - great, good news indeed :)

charts - ah cool, hadnt realised i could upload, thats very useful.
quite like your idea of a shared area...
perhaps the app could just force a common simple structure into a shared space e.g. Region -> Country -> airport, or even just airport code
then just let people upload/manage - might be a bit of a 'free for all', but im sure people with sort it out themselves.
(also keep the 'private' mode, so people can upload stuff thats not so useful to others)

a couple of other thoughts for you :)
- saved waypoints, nearby waypoints ... would be nice if these were availble in FMS (as part of the NWP dialog, a toggle perhaos)
- waypoints ... perhaps you could combine this with charts ... i.e. have an INFO menu option, which then has sub option, to select charts or waypoints
(p.s. thinking about ipad, as iphone i pretty much just leave on either COMMS or EFIS)

a couple of questions as well,
- can you change which is the 'active' radio ( i see a radio stack button, but doest seem to do anything, im using C172)
- airways for FMC, the manual mentions you can use airways, but i couldnt get this to work, does this work on Xplane, with xplane nav data?
(i tried manuals example, i.e. enter fix, then tried to NWP with airway code that has previous fix on it, but just get "no matching points found')

thanks again for a great product, though i also have LRs EFIS, i find this one much easier to use!

I think so, I presume you mean capturing the ILS from the opposite direction, no?

Thanks for the suggestions, will take them into account.

About your questions:

- There is no real switch between the active radio; the only switch is the button that toggles the NAV mode from NAV1, NAV2 and FMC. This will make the Approach / VOR / ADF needles and bugs in the MFD and PFD react in function where you are with regards to what you have tuned in NAV1 or ADF1, NAV2 or ADF2 and FMC respectively.

For COMs it doesn't change anything, they are both active.

About Airways, you can only use it with the Navigraph data (you can use the default 1006 which is free and comes with airtrack if you don't have a cycle). In other words it doesn't work with the X-Plane airways although you can perfectly use the Navigraph cycle to fly Airways with X-Plane.

The reason for this is just a technical / logistics one; the airways in XP were encoded in a different way and don't have sequence numbers and other parameters that the app uses, and so it was more difficult to make it happen and it was never done. That and the fact that the XP airways are often wrong when you fly in Europe at least.

enjoy the app,
joao
