drag/drop to create charts on web; in-app webview for chart browsing

Posted on March 9, 2014 20:57 by joshwa

As I am prepping for my flight, uploading charts via the web interface is quite cumbersome. Some ideas for improving the process (besides downloading 5GB on maps onto my device!)

1. In web account, let me drag and drop a PDF into a section without hitting "create new", browsing for file, etc. You can prompt me to enter the code/name for the chart after the chart is done uploading

2. In the charts section of the app, let me open a website (e.g. skyvector.com) to view charts (and download them) from within the app.

Also as an aside, can you make the hit areas on the ipad app buttons a bit larger? I often miss the small buttons for EFIS/FMC/MCP/etc which is distracting during a flight.

Of course everything you've done thus far has been a huge success and is easily the best flightsim addon purchase I've ever made. Thanks and keep up the great work!

Hi,

I'm sorry for it ... I know it is a burden to upload and download charts the current way.

As for 1) I would have to investigate how this could be done in terms of web site programming so I'll put it on the list.

On 2) this would require to turn AirTrack into a web browser so I'm afraid this is out of scope.

But what we might be able to do in one of the next future versions is to allow you to just drag your charts directly to the iPad using iTunes without having to upload/download them. So this would solve your problem.

As for the buttons, AirTrack is due for an image revamp so it will have new buttons too at this point :)

Hopefully all these in AirTrack 4.0 :)

thanks for the suggestions,

1) there are plenty of places that use this paradigm (dropbox, gmail, trello, etc) Shouldn't be too hard to find example code out there.

2) you can embed a UIWebView inside the app -- go search the app store for various "image downloader" apps and see how they do it. Alternatively register yourself as an "open in..." handler for .pdf files so I browse skyvector on my mobilesafari, open the PDF there, and select "open in..." AirTrack.

Personally I hate iTunes sharing as it means a) I need to launch itunes and try to find where the file sharing pane is this week, and b) I pretty much never dock/sync my ipad. It just exists separately from my computer. I'd much prefer to sync via my air account than go through all the hoops itunes puts in front of me!

maybe sync all charts from a dropbox folder? ooo I like that idea a lot!

I fully support the idea of sync to a dropbox folder. If it's a problem to do directly in AirTrack maybe you can change the method used on the website. I'd like to create the folder structure and .pdf files on my PC then simply upload the entire folder to the charts section.

Thanks for your consideration,
Tom
