Using Custom Waypoints for a Flight Plan ... and others

Posted on April 9, 2014 06:04 by scubaguy

First off: congrats on such a great and comprehensive App! It's made my X-Plane life so much easier (despite some issues, which I've reported on the support page) ... really good stauff and I'm glad I've found AirTrack!

The below might have been asked before, but here are a few things that occur to me when using AirTrack iPad with X-Plane 10 (Mac):

- I've created a bunch of custom waypoints, which I need for VFR flights (AirTrack supports me a lot for VFR flights, too). However, if I enter such custom waypoints into a flight plan via the web interface, they are not recognized (they are recognized on the iPad once they've synced there from the web).
- I'm a VATSIM flyer and really like the integration of VATSIM into AirTrack (thanks!). However, it doesn't always work ... sometimes I can see other planes, sometimes I can't. Also, a separate button on the EFIS to show/hide other traffic could be a good enhancement.
- this might be a "newbie-question", but many of the small and local fixes, which may be listed/displayed on other apps, such as QuickPlan for Mac (fswidgets.com), are not available when planning a flight via AirTrack (web or iPad). Why is that?

Again, this is not critizism, but hopefully constructive feedback ;-)

Thanks for your reply and help.

Never mind the 2nd point about VATSIM planes ... just read about the TCA button ;-)

Looking forward to feedback on Custom Waypoints and smaller, local FIXes.

Hi,

About the custom waypoints and the web route planner, you are right. It is a bug. Didn't think of that. OK will add to the Todo list to fix when possible.

VATSIM integration depends on polling info from vat info servers via the web so it is in general delayed and might not be always available if connectivity to a server is interrupted :( But it is how it is for now I'm afraid. The alternative would be a native VATSIM client but this would invoice signing VATSIM's NDA and a few more things and not sure if it is permitted in an app that is not free. About the TCA button you found it :)

The fixes displayed are those found in the navigation database, not more and not less. By default AirTrack ships with an old Navigraph cycle (1307 at present) so it has its fixes. Other apps will have another source of data with different fixes. If you are flying X-Plane the fixes in X-Plane may be different from those in AirTrack. If you want the same FIXes you can open the "Navigation Data" page and download the X-Plane data cycle (currently 1310) which is free. From then you should have the same fixes as you'll have in X-Plane. However please note, when doing so, you will loose additional data which is not available in X-Plane's, namely SIDs, STARs, Approaches and Airways, and some of X-Plane's data is far from correct.

that's it I think,
thanks for the comments and suggestions,

Hi Joao,

Thanks for all the valuable information ... and I'm (sorta) glad to have discovered that bug. Please post here or let me know otherwise when it's fixed so that I can use my CWPs via the web route planner. That does make planning a lot easier.

As for the VATSIM integration, it all makes perfect sense from a licensing perspective. I can live with the way it is, of couse ... am simply trying to make AirTrack my "one stop shop" for as much information as possible so that I don't have to have two iMacs, a MB Air, and an iPad running for a flight, as I do now ;-)

The current Navigraph cycle is 1404 and I have that loaded in AirTrack. I guess I'll have to go find a secondary source of Navigraph data for planning purposes so that all the data matches. I'd much rather have the complete Navigraph data available in AirTrack ;-)

One more question that popped up yesterday while "playing with AirTrack": can the demo and FAA chart data (theoretically) be deleted/removed? I realize it doesn't count as part of my allocation (or does it?), but I don't need most of it ... If not, don't worry. I do realize the data isn't physically on my iPad unless I download it (and I need to clear it afterwards), but since it's largely demo material, can I remove it from my display?

Appreciate your help and information! Thanks.

Hey again,

Not sure what you mean by the complete NG data in AirTrack? If you have 1404 you can download it to AirTrack of course by redeeming its code, and then it will be the complete 1404 cycle.

About the charts, FAA charts don't taken any of your space on the server; they are on a shared area so they don't count as part of your allocation. Unfortunately they cannot be removed at the moment, no, that can be something for the future, but as you said, as long as you don't download them they won't take space on the device.

fun flights,
joao
