METAR lookup and decoding

Posted on January 21, 2012 12:10 by FullShot

Creating a new section, or already using ghe waypoints lookup page, when searching for a ICAO, a full metar report should come up. Helping the pilot decide over the best rw for landing.

In the chance its to much info to implement, at least the info of winds/ local qnh and temp.

thank you in advance,

Best Regards,

This is already there, kind of :)

You can lookup an ICAO in the waypoints section, save it, and then tap on it to reveal its details. There you will see the current winds , temp and QNH with a wind direciton arrow. The METAR is from the current real weather and not from the simulator, so you will need to be flying with real weather.

Since above you have the runways drawn, you can easily pick the best runway to land. If you need the ILS frequencies, scroll down and they're there too :)

The only problem of displaying the METAR in the list of airports (when looking up) instead of after you have selected one, is that if your search returns 100 airports, this would cause 100 metar downloads. This is why the weather only shows up on individual airports and not on the list.

you are totally right

I wasn´t looking that in waypoints, the airport info was scrollable.

Any chance for visibility and clouds/rain?

The METAR decoder needs improving, but this is possible and will go on the wish list.

Thanks for asking,

The "Aero Plus" WXR App for iPad does a fine job of decoding METAR. Have a look.

Also, it would be great if frequencies in the waypoint details could be clicked and automatically inserted into COM and NAV radios. Shold be easy ro implement!
